How to Rank in AI Mode: 5 Factors That Get You Cited in 2026
Google's AI Mode is reshaping search visibility—77% of sessions generate zero outbound clicks.
This video reveals the five factors that determine whether your brand gets cited in AI answers, based on analysis of 50+ ranking signals across 129,000 domains.
The strongest predictor is Google visibility itself: domains with over 1 million monthly visitors earn nearly three times more citations than those under 2,700 visitors.
Domain authority and page-level trust also play critical roles, with pages scoring 24+ in Page Trust earning double the citations of low-trust pages.
Brand visibility—measured through branded search demand, Reddit mentions, and Quora discussions—signals to AI Mode that people know and trust your brand.
Content length beyond 1,500 words, regular updates every 2-3 months, and structured elements like FAQs consistently boost AI citations, while Core Web Vitals like LCP and INP influence performance in ways that reward substance over extreme speed.
No matter how fast ChatGPT and other agents grow, Google still owns the search journey — and now it’s weaving AI Mode right into that experience. As we’re recording this, AI Mode appears as a separate tab, a “dive deeper” button inside AI Overviews, and many SEOs already see it can become the primary way we search, replacing the familiar list of links. It gives answers right away. And the thing is… people stay there. A usability study by Growth Memo found that 77% of sessions had zero outbound clicks, and nearly 90% of first interactions were with the AI answer itself. People skim, decide, and move on. So visibility in AI Mode is becoming a real competitive advantage — it’s how your brand stays present in a world where clicks are becoming scarce. And in this video, I’ll walk you through the exact factors AI Mode rewards, based on our study of over 50 ranking factors and 129,000 domains. Alright, let's start with the number one factor that has the strongest impact on AI Mode:
Google visibility. It’s the same foundation we’ve been working with in SEO for years — except now, AI Mode leans on it even more. Here’s what matters most inside this group: Global domain traffic is the strongest predictor. Sites with under 2,700 visitors earn about 2 citations, while domains pulling in over 1 million monthly visitors hit around 6 citations. That’s almost three times as much. Traffic to your homepage matters just as much. Homepages with over 1,500 visits get about double the citations compared to those with 10 or fewer visits. And traffic alone isn’t everything. Pages that already rank in Google’s top 10 across 4 or more keywords get cited more often. Put simply: SEO and AI Mode optimization aren’t separate workflows — they reinforce each other. And that shouldn’t surprise anyone. Now, what do you actually do with this? Increase domain traffic to your site. Promote your content, build helpful hubs, and actively distribute your pages. Improve your rankings in Google’s top 10 results. Strengthen keyword clusters, tighten on-page SEO,
and refresh pages close to breaking through. Boost homepage traffic. Update it regularly, improve UX, surface key resources, and link to it internally. Strengthen internal linking. Support pages that are “almost there” so they can hit the Top 10 across more queries. If you're wondering whether this channel deserves your “like and subscribe” — it does. Promise. On to the second strongest group of factors — Domain Authority and Trust. If Group 1 is all about visibility, this one is all about credibility. And for AI Mode, credibility comes from how strong and trusted your backlink profile is. Sites with more than 24,000 referring domains see a major jump in citations compared to domains with only a few hundred. Pages with a high Page Trust of 24 and above consistently earn more than double the citations of low-trust pages. And there’s a clear “good enough” range — once a page hits around 19 to 23 points, performance stabilizes, even if your domain isn’t massive. So, you don’t need to be a giant domain.
Page-level trust can carry you, even when the domain is still growing. Now, what do you do with this? Earn diverse, high-quality backlinks to lift your overall domain authority. Strengthen internal linking so Page Trust flows to your most important URLs. Create link-worthy assets — data studies, deep guides, comparison pages, tools. Upgrade low-trust pages by adding expert quotes, stats, clearer structure, and stronger topical coverage. Don't go anywhere, because brand visibility is the next piece of the puzzle, and it plays a much bigger role in AI Mode than most SEOs realize. AI Mode looks at the demand around your brand, asking questions like “how often do people search for you?” and “how often do you show up in public conversations on socials?” These are the key drivers: Domains with over 240,000 monthly brand searches reach around 5 citations, while brands with very low search volume sit closer to 3 or 4 citations. Quick note: huge brand search numbers don’t boost citations on their own. They usually rise because the site also has strong traffic,
backlinks, and content. So yes, growing branded search helps — but only when the rest of your SEO foundation is in place. The next driver is the number of mentions on Quora. Brands with very few Quora mentions average at just 3 citations, while high-mention brands climb to nearly 5 citations. And Reddit follows the same pattern. Brands with minimal mentions stay at around 3 citations, while active, organically discussed brands jump to 5.5 citations. As you can see from these charts, all of these social mentions need a balance. Too few don’t matter, too many look commercial. Genuine, helpful activity is what actually builds trust with AI Mode. So AI Mode looks for signs that people know you, talk about you, and trust you enough to mention you. Here’s where to invest your effort: Grow branded search demand through PR, partnerships, content distribution, and consistent brand presence. Participate in discussions on platforms like Reddit and Quora — but naturally. Be helpful, not promotional. Publish expert-driven content
that earns mentions and sparks organic conversations. Let's move on to the fourth group of factors — Content, Quality & Structure. This is the part most SEOs feel comfortable with, and thankfully, it still matters for AI Mode. Not as much as visibility and authority, but enough to make a meaningful difference. AI Mode wants content that’s clear, thorough, easy to parse, and regularly updated. For example: Long-form content performs better. Pages over 1,500 words earn more citations than short posts under 500 words — roughly a full citation more. And this is especially helpful for smaller domains — long, detailed content can partially make up for weaker traffic or fewer backlinks. Structure helps AI interpret your page. Sections with around 100 to 150 words get more citations than pages with ultra-short or ultra-long blocks. Freshness matters. Pages updated within the last 2 to 3 months earn around 5 citations, while content untouched for years drops closer to 4 citations. Skip publishing just for the sake of
activity — update and strengthen your existing content instead. FAQ sections and question-style headings help you increase AI Mode citations. Pages with FAQ blocks hit around 4.9 citations, compared to 4.4 without. And the same works for question-style headings. A small bump — but consistent. Clear, semantically relevant URLs and meta descriptions also help. Pages with broad, descriptive URLs tend to earn more citations, while URLs that are too vague — or weirdly narrow — often underperform. And meta descriptions follow the same pattern. Now, here’s how you can put this to work: Aim for more than 1,500 words when the topic needs depth — that’s the sweet spot. Refresh key pages every 2 to 3 months with new data, relevant statistics, examples, or clarifications. Keep your structure tight: short sections, clear headings, and scannable formatting. Add FAQ blocks to cover common questions and help AI interpret your content. Use clear, descriptive URLs and meta descriptions that match the full topic, not just a single keyword.
Write for clarity — simple, natural language that’s easy for people (and AI) to process. The last factors are related to technical performance. And the rule is simple here— load fast enough to keep people engaged, but offer enough depth for AI Mode to trust you. The two signals that matter most here are INP and LCP. INP (or Interaction to Next Paint) behaves in an interesting way. Pages that are too fast — usually very simple pages — average at just 2 to 3 citations. However, pages with moderate INP scores actually perform better, landing around 5 citations. LCP (or Largest Contentful Paint) is more straightforward. Fast-loading pages that take up to a second to load earn close to 5 citations, while very slow pages drop closer to 4 citations. In short, don’t go past 1.85 seconds — that’s where visibility starts to drop. And here are your next action steps: Improve your LCP by optimizing images, removing layout shifts, and speeding up your main
content load. Watch your INP — make sure your interactive elements including menus, buttons, and forms are smooth. Fix slow or bloated pages that drag down your overall technical profile. Check your Core Web Vitals regularly and fix the biggest issues first. That is literally the playbook.
