Can AI Articles Really Rank on Google?
AI-generated content can achieve initial Google rankings, but pure AI articles fail to sustain them.
SE Ranking tested this by publishing 2,000 AI-only articles across 20 brand-new domains and comparing them to AI-assisted posts on an established blog.
The AI-only articles initially showed impressive results—71% of new domain pages got indexed within 36 days, eight sites ranked for over 1,000 keywords each, and traffic reached 122,000 impressions and 240 clicks.
However, by early February, none of these AI-only articles ranked in the top 100.
The established blog's AI-assisted content, by contrast, maintained 555,000 impressions and 2,300 clicks over a year, with several pieces cited in AI Overviews.
The key difference lies in trust signals, human originality, author expertise, and domain authority.
Success requires publishing on trusted domains, building links, adding real authorship and expert review, refreshing content, and tracking performance in AI search systems.
Can content generated purely with AI rank on Google? The short answer is yes. But briefly, let's uncover why by diving into real data we rank and got from publishing 2,000 AI articles. We ran two tests. First, we put up six AI assisted articles on our main blog. Second, we generated 2,000 articles using only AI for 20 brand new domains with zero authority. In just 36 days, 71% of brand new domain pages got indexed. Eight sites ranked for over a,000 keywords each. That drove 122,000 impressions and a little over 240 clicks. Five sites had up to 30% of track keywords in the top 30 on desktop and 37% on mobile. Then it all cratered. By February 3rd, none of the AI only articles were ranking in the top 100. Traffic went to near zero. There are two likely reasons behind this. One, no trust signals. The brand new domains just don't have any authority. And the second reason is there's no human originality. The texts
are fully AI written, no curation, no author EAT. Meanwhile, the AI assisted posts on our main blog kept performing over 555,000 impressions and over 2,300 clicks in a year, half ranking in the top 10, and several cited in AI overviews 6 months plus after publishing. So, can AI content rank? Yes. Will it stick? Not unless you add human curation and trust. Here's your playbook. Publish on trusted domains. Build links and internal links. Add real authorship and expert review. Refresh content, especially in dynamic niches. Track how you appear in AI answers and iterate.
